How to Make Homemade Air Freshener with Essential Oils

We all want our homes to smell nice, but if the thought of synthetic fragrance and questionable chemicals doesn’t appeal to you, join the club!

The problem with synthetic fragrance

According to the Environmental Working Group, most commercial air fresheners don’t actually “remove odours”, but rather mask them with harsh chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like benzene, formaldehyde. Such chemicals and have been linked to health concerns like headaches and nausea and have been shown to aggravate allergies and asthma.

Don’t even get us started on phthalates (pronounced Tha-LATEs). These are the chemicals that are often found in fragrance and have been linked to endocrine disruption in many studies. We don’t like to disrupt our hormones, unnaturally, any more than you do.

The worst part is, there is no legal requirement for companies to disclose their “proprietary” ingredients. So, you never really know what you’re being exposed to when you spritz, spray, and plug-in those lab-manufactured, smelly substances. One thing’s for sure though, there’s nothing “fresh” about synthetic air fresheners.

Non-toxic air freshener alternatives

Given such problems with commercial air fresheners, many of us are looking for non-toxic alternatives. Green recipes made with essential oils are easy and will have your home smelling fresh and inviting quicker than you can say “plug in”.

Besides the obvious benefits of avoiding exposure to harsh chemicals, making your own air fresheners with essential oils can also have mood-boosting benefits. It’s called aromatherapy and we’re down for it.

Room spray

Making an essential oil spray to mist around your house is so easy. Simply fill a spray bottle with a cup of water and 6-8 drops each of 3 different air-freshening essential oils. Mist the spray around your home (especially in the “unfresh” spots).

Use a diffuser

Purify and mood boost with a combination of your favourite essential oils mixed into water in an electronic diffuser. It’s a must-have for the health-minded who love fresh-smelling spaces.

Simmer on stovetop

Don’t have a diffuser? No worries! You can easily create your own using a pot of boiling water. Simply simmer a pot of water on your stovetop and add a few drops of the essential oil of your choice. The scent of this homemade air freshener will permeate throughout your house. But, remember to keep adding water and essential oil as the water evaporates. No one wants to deal with a burnt pot. Safety first!

Disinfectant solution

Dirty homes are stinky homes! Disinfect surfaces with a natural cleaner made using pure essential oils. Simply combine the following in a spray bottle:

  • 4 tbsp white vinegar
  • 3 c water
  • 10 drops of your favourite essential oil

Use the cleaner anywhere that needs sanitizing or cleaning — counters, toilets, door knobs.

There are lots of ways to use essential oils to freshen the air in your home and we hope we’ve shown you that it’s easier to use than you think! We’re confident that once you swap artificial scents with natural ones, you’ll never go back.
