My Nightly, Natural Self-Care Routine
Ok. So you rocked dinnertime tonight, got the kids showered, in their pj’s, teeth brushed, hair brushed, nails clipped, questions answered about the trials and tribulations of childhood, book read and now they’re finally asleep.
Now, let me tell you – the dishes can wait. It’s time to take care of you.
I know you’ve heard this before, but it seems not a lot of us are actually heading the self-care advice. In fact, did you know that a whopping 78% of women surveyed said they often put off taking care of themselves because they are too busy taking care of their family?
Taking care of your family does not mean that your wellbeing has to sit on the back-burner. Self-care should not be considered a luxury. We know that taking the time for yourself is an essential part of helping you to be the happiest version of yourself and that, obviously, helps you be the best mom you can be.
I know, first hand, the value of creating a regular self-nurturing routine. Even if it’s only a few minutes each day, self-care allows me to reap the rewards both in mind and body.
I have several ways in which I take care of myself, but today I’m talking about my nightly, natural self-care routine because – for me – part of that care also means using safe and natural skincare products in my cleansing and beauty routines.
Many moons ago (feels like another lifetime), I was actually a certified cosmetician. While I learned so many amazing things about skincare, I gave up conventional products years ago and haven’t looked back.
Since using all-natural products that don’t overburden my skin with harsh chemicals and fragrances, I’ve noticed a huge improvement in its appearance and texture.
So, I wanted to share my nighty natural faves with you here.
Even when I’m exhausted after a long day, I make sure to follow these 5 easy steps with my favourite, natural products. I love it because it helps me “wash away the stress of the day”, and feel refreshed and happy before bed.
Ready, set, self-care!
1. Turn on your favourite positive tunes!
I crank my tunes as loud as I can without waking the kiddies up. This really helps me hone in and honour the mood I’m feeling that night. I often find myself singing along with the lyrics and dancing while I prep my skincare routine. This always helps me unwind from the long day. I’m not the only one. Studies have shown that listening to music can help reduce stress and improve your overall health.
2. Remove your makeup with your favourite facial cleanser
With my tunes on, I apply my favourite, gentle cleanser, liberally, by hand. I’m absolutely loving my Derma E – Even Tone – Brightening Cleanser, which is pH balanced, made from natural ingredients like Green Tea and C-Ester, plus it’s sulphate-free and cruelty-free and leaves my skin feeling so refreshed and clean. 3. Apply your favourite mineral mist or toner
After I remove my makeup and cleanse with warm water, I always splash my face with cold water and then apply a toner. Not only is this change in temperature great for facial lymphatics, but I find this helps tighten my pores. I find it especially calming for my skin.
4. Nourish your skin for cell regeneration
After toning, I move onto my favourite facial serum – Graydon Fullmoon Serum. This product has been a game-changer for me. It’s packed with so many amazing ingredients used to fight the signs of ageing. I can, honestly, say that my skin never looks and feels as great as when I use this serum. 5. Reflect on 3 things that made you feel special today
I know, I know. This step might sound a little funny – but the truth is when I spend a few seconds reflecting on things that made me feel great about the day – it eases my mind before bed and leaves me feeling less stressed and more positive.
Taking the time to reflect on three positive things from my day sets me up for healthy and peaceful sleep. Simple things do the trick! Whether I feel grateful for the special card that Ruby (my daughter) made me at school, or the delicious meal we enjoyed as a family that night; each little bit of focus on gratitude plays an important role in my mood before completing the day.
So there you have it. It only takes a few minutes to show yourself a little self-care before bed, but the rewards go a long way.
